Stool Sample Collection Instructions:
Routine, Culture, and Occult Blood

Stool samples must be collected in the clean, dry containers provided by the laboratory to ensure that the examination is not affected.


Routine Stool Analysis & Stool Culture

  • Stop antibiotics or intestinal antiseptics 48 hours before the test (unless advised by your doctor).
  • Collect the sample in a clean, dry container.
  • Warning: Samples mixed with water, soap, urine, tissue paper, or taken from diapers are not accepted.
  • The sample must reach the lab within 1 to 2 hours (within 30 minutes if the sample is liquid).
  • If a parasitic infection is suspected, the doctor may request 3 samples over 3 consecutive days.

 

  • Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT)
  • Note: Instructions vary depending on the test type used in the lab. Please consult the lab.
  • Modern tests (Specific): No dietary restrictions, but avoid brushing your teeth on the day of sample collection to prevent gum bleeding.
  • Older tests (Non-Specific): You may be asked to avoid the following for 48 hours: all types of red meat and liver, radishes, rheumatism medications, aspirin, vitamin C, cortisone, or iron supplements. Laxatives are not allowed.

    Stool tests are used to detect intestinal infections, bleeding, and digestive problems.
