Swab preparations

Instructions for Swab Tests (Throat, Cervical) and Sputum Samples

• These tests require precise preparations to ensure a representative sample of the disease and to avoid false negative results.

• Sputum Samples

• Routine sputum sample (excluding TB):
  • Collect the sample in the morning immediately after waking up and before breakfast.
  • Rinse your mouth with water only (do not use mouthwash or toothpaste).
  • The sample must be sputum from the lungs, not saliva from the mouth. Inhaling steam from hot water may help expectoration.
  • Send the sample to the lab within one hour, or store it in the refrigerator.
• Sputum sample for Tuberculosis (TB):
  • Collect three samples over three consecutive days (using the same procedure as routine sputum: morning, before food, after rinsing mouth with water only).

• Throat Swab (Throat Swab):
  • The patient must fast for 8 hours.
  • It is recommended to stop antibiotics for 48 hours.
  • Do not use mouthwash or any throat antiseptic about 8 hours before the swab.
• Cervical Swab (Vaginal Swab):
  • Women are asked to avoid vaginal showers, using tampons, or sexual intercourse for 24 to 48 hours before the test.

Specialized Cultures

• Prostate Culture (Prostate Culture):
  • Avoid antibiotics for 48 hours (consult your doctor).
  • Abstain from sexual intercourse for 3-5 days before the test.
  • Hold urine for one hour before performing the test.

Swabs, cultures, and sputum tests aim to accurately identify pathogens and select the appropriate treatment (antibiotics).
